Bus on Shoulders: Analysis of Preliminary Concept

At the current time, several transit agencies around the country are making use of Bus on Shoulders (BOS) as an operating strategy. Pace Suburban Bus has conducted preliminary feasibility work on this topic and has identified several corridors where such a strategy might relieve congestion in the Chicago metropolitan area. However, a more detailed study is required to evaluate institutional issues related to BOS operations and design in the Chicago metropolitan area and potentially identify facilities where BOS strategies can be implemented.

Abstract

Three major tasks were undertaken to assess Bus on Shoulders feasibility in the metropolitan Chicago region.

1. Task One is to identify the major stakeholders with the assistance of a Technical Review Panel. This core group will consist of the decision-makers for the region. 2. Task Two involves conducting structured interviews of the identified stakeholders and will identify issues and concerns anticipated to be major obstacles to implementing BOS operations in the region. 3. Task Three seeks to address issues, concerns, and barriers to Bus On Shoulder implementation in the Chicago region as documented in Task Two.
